The Cat of Nine Homes

Koray Avcı Çakman & Elif Sakallı

You cannot own a cat; you can only be their human.

A kitten leaves home in search of happiness and freedom. As she wanders around the city, she comes across people from all walks of life: an old woman, a ballerina, an immigrant boy who respects her freedom, a homeless man, and many more. With each visit, the reader also discovers the meaning of “home”—whether it’s an elaborately furnished apartment or a cardboard box.
The kitten’s adventures lead to pleasant encounters, such as when the immigrant boy meets the old woman, and for the first time in months, he can play the piano again. The kitten has many names: she is the Cadillac of the old woman, Saida—meaning “happiness”—of the immigrant boy, Allegro of the ballerina, and many more. Her emotions change in each house. What would you name her?
